The name of the city of Münster refers to its origin. Münster was founded in 793 by Charles the Great as a monastery with a monastery settlement. The city received city rights in the 12th century, and in the next century it joined the Hanseatic League (a union of coastal trading cities supporting themselves in the economic field).

Münster suffered severely during the Second World War - as a result of air raids, over 90% of historic buildings in the old part of the city were destroyed. After the war, most of them have been carefully rebuilt and today the city enjoys a picturesque center in which old, historic houses, churches and museums contrast with modern architecture. The surrounding Promenada city center, numerous parks and the Aasee lake invite to active outdoor recreation, and bicycles are the most popular means of transport in Münster.
