Rouen is a city located on the lower Seine, known for the beautiful Notre-Dame Cathedral and associated with Jeanne d'Arc - several attractions in the city refer to this character. The beginnings of the city date back to ancient times, when a small Gallic stronghold was located here. Some time later it was conquered and occupied by the Romans, who created here one of their colonies called Rotomagus. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city was invaded and looted by the Normans several times, and finally, in 911, the city became the capital of their principality.

Despite the war damage, many historic buildings have survived in Rouen. One of the city's most valuable monuments is the monumental gothic Cathedral of Our Lady (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen). Its construction began in the twelfth century and lasted nearly four subsequent centuries. The tower of the temple is nearly 151 meters high and in the years 1876-1880 was the tallest building in the world. Inside the temple is the tomb of Richard the Lionheart. The cathedral was made famous around the world when Claude Monet painted a series of nearly 30 paintings depicting the temple at different times of the day. Other important monuments of the city are the Palace of Justice, the tower of Joan of Arc, the town hall, the Gothic church of St-Ouen and the picturesque Rue du Gros Horloge.
