Lausanne is a historic city in the French speaking part of Switzerland, located on the picturesque hillside of Mount Jorat on Lake Geneva. The history of the city dates back to ancient times, when in the place of the former Helvetic settlement, the Romans founded a military camp called Lausanna. Today, its remains can be found in the western part of the city in the coastal district of Vida. Today Lausanne is an important administrative center and the capital of the Vaud canton. The International Olympic Committee and an Olympic Museum are located there.

The Old Town is the most impressive historic part of the city. It is worth visiting not only because of great restaurants and bars, but also many monuments worth seeing. One of the most valuable monuments of Lausanne is the monumental Early Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame erected at the end of the 12th century. It is a peak achievement of the Burgundian Gothic and is considered one of the most outstanding medieval buildings in all of Switzerland. Other monuments worth seeing are the 14th century Château St Maire, the seventeenth century Town Hall, the University building, the Château-d'Ouchy, the Musee de l'Art brut (famous for its impressive collection of works of art created by patients of psychiatric clinics and prisons).
