Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®)

The TOEFL test is the most widely respected English-language test in the world, aimed at non native speakers of English. The TOEFL test measures the ability to use and understand English at the university level, ie it evaluates the ability of prospective students to combine listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks. TOEFL is recognized by more than 7,500 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries.

There are two formats for the TOEFL test:

  • the Internet-based Test (iBT)
  • the Paper-based Test (PBT)

The format you take depends on the location of your test center. Most test takers take the Internet-based Test (iBT). Test centers that do not have Internet access offer the Paper-based Test (PBT).

In addition to the test, the ETS TOEFL Program provides tools and guides to help you prepare for the test and improve your English-language skills.

There is no passing or failing TOEFL® score; individual higher education institutions and agencies set their own score requirements. TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date and there is no limit to the number of times you can take the test.
